Caught up in the hype of running? Brilliant!
Not sure where to start? No Stress
Here is my top 4 tips as a running coach that helps people from 5k's to Marathons.
Not every single run needs to be an all out run.
- Most people don't stop for fitness issues. It is often for injuries that come from the body going from 0 to 100 too often. Shin Splints, Knee Issues, hip issues are often common with new runners because the load of running and the repeated action is something they are not use to. Meaning they stop because of injuries then never get back into it.
The best two first purchase you will make as a runner.
- A watch and a good pair of dailys.
A sports watch like Garmin or Coros is always handy as it gives you all the important details to help you track your progress and also other details like navigation, heart rate and other helpful information. + it is easier to not use your phone.
Shoes will arguably be the most important as they can keep you going for longer! Daily shoes are basically good all rounders that are what we call neutral shoes. They don't have carbon plates, a low heel drop etc etc. This is very person dependent so I would recommend speaking to me directly or visiting a running shop!
Planning routes will give you a lot more confidence.
- Knowing a simple out and back route or a loop nearby your house will always be a great way to improve your runs instead of doing strange out and backs around your neighborhood which will naturally slow you down. Using something like Strava and preset or routes other have used are great!
Easy runs don't need to be complex.
- Conversational paced runs are a great indicator for fitness levels relative to pace as Heart rate can't always be the most accurate, especially when you are using just a watch. It lets you see what pressure is on the heart and lungs whilst you run and lets you see what kind of pace you can see. Obviously just try and find a mate so it doesn't look weird.
